It’s Time for Congress to Create an Employment Verification System That Works

 Fact Check

Mandating E-Verify Won’t Fix a Broken Employment Verification System

Did you know the New Employee Verification Act (NEVA - H.R. 5515) offers an alternative to E-Verify that will help prevent the use of fraudulent documents and stolen Social Security numbers?

•    E-Verify, despite its high-tech name, is based on outdated paper-based processes that cannot detect document fraud or identity theft – two common tactics used by unauthorized workers to beat the system and get jobs.

•    NEVA establishes a new, voluntary system whereby employers may access private sector experts to verify the identity of a worker – and safeguard their identities through the use of biometric technologies.

•    79 percent of Americans support using biometrics in the employment verification process.

•    NEVA also provides the opportunity for individuals to block the use of their SSN by others in employment verification to help prevent identity theft.

The New Employee Verification Act will mandate a national employment verification system for new hires that is reliable, efficient and secure.
